www.orsracksdirect.com SportRack ABR511 J Stacker Kayak Rack review video & demo by ORS Racks Direct. Demonstration movie of the SportRack j-cradle style kayak carrier features. An economical solution for transporting any style of kayak safely and securely. Nice Rack! - Firm Up Your Ride With an Eye-Catching Cargo Carrier

!±8± Nice Rack! - Firm Up Your Ride With an Eye-Catching Cargo Carrier

There's no shame in admitting that most guys can appreciate a good rack. It's in our nature. And, the more that's packed into it, the better. Because the more you can haul, the more fun you're bound to have. So when it's time to hit the backcountry or slide into those slopes, don't leave home without outfitting your ride with a roof rack or cargo carrier.

Roof racks, like the Mini Cooper rack or FJ Cruiser roof rack, allow you to safely and easily transport your recreational gear to and from your destination while providing extra room in the cab for snacks, beverages or a couple of your freeloading buddies. A high-quality CRV rack is forged from steel tubing, capable of holding up to 300 lbs of evenly distributed weight, and usually works with any cargo carrier system. However, beware of the generic rack. The best roof racks are personally-tailored to your specific make, model and year to provide a custom fit, and come complete with all the necessary hardware for a quick and easy installation. Plus, they're finished in a tough black-powder coating that resists corrosion and manufactured by trusted names like Smittybilt and MBRP.

Aside from their sturdy construction, a CRV rack, like the Yakima rack, provides convenience. They store bikes, boards, skis and all of your other gear up and out of the way. Unlike a rear-mounted rack, which often connects to your trailer hitch, a FJ Cruiser roof rack (or similar model) won't block your vision or obstruct access to the rear of your vehicle.

But not everything you take with you is going be oversized. Sometimes you need a little extra space for smaller things like additional luggage, souvenirs or the baffling array of crap the kids can't leave home without. It's at times like these that rooftop carriers come in handy. They act like a second trunk, expanding your storage capability while allowing for more leg room or an extra cooler in the cab. And, on a long trip, a little extra leg room is worth its weight in gold.

Many rooftop carriers, like the Thule roof box, feature a snap-on mounting system that often works with your existing roof rack, providing quick installation and simple removal for convenient storage between trips. Constructed from all-weather ABS, rooftop carriers come in three sizes with up to 17 cubic feet of cargo room, and they provide the added benefit of security. Unlike a standard roof rack, rooftop carriers allow you to lock your belongings when you stop to stretch your legs or head out on the trail, effectively protecting your valuables from thieves.

Roof Top Cargo Carriers - The Good, the Bad and the Clumsy

!±8± Roof Top Cargo Carriers - The Good, the Bad and the Clumsy

When you are ready to hit the road and travel you want to load and go quickly and conveniently.  One popular way to carry gear is with a roof mount carrier.  Before you invest in a roof mount system do your homework, there are significant drawbacks.

Roof mount boxes, trays and racks have major issues. The main problems are aerodynamics, installing, loading, storage and cost.

First and foremost all roof mounted systems ruin vehicle aerodynamics, robbing horsepower and gas mileage.  On long trips or repeated travels the drag penalty adds up.  Independent consumer tests have shown an average of 20 percent mileage loss with roof mount carriers.  The aerodynamic penalty can add 20% to your fuel bill.

Mounting gear on your roof makes your vehicle more top heavy and makes it susceptible to cross winds. Have you every been suddenly hit by a gust of wind and had to quickly adjust?  It really gets your adrenaline going.  Roof mounted boxes act as a sail and catch cross winds, making your drive tricky in windy conditions.

Installing a roof mounted carrier, requires special hardware and lifters, that add up. The big boxes are bulky, cumbersome and require 2 people to lift into place.

Mounting on your roof top is a real nuisance, that requires lifting luggage and gear above your head.  Or using a ladder, and carefully lifting and loading everything.

The big hard shell boxes need to be stored between trips.  They are long and take up a lot of space in a closet or garage.

Then there is cost.  A full roof box system (lifters, cross rails and cargo box) can set you back 0 or more!  The price alone makes you think twice.

So after you do your diligence you find:  roof mounted boxes are a pain to load, rob mileage, make the vehicle top heavy, create wind drag, need to be stored and will cost a lot.  So you ask why do I want a roof mounted carrier?

With that same question in mind new rear mount alternatives have come on the market.  They are like a back pack for your car, where they mount out of the wind stream, virtually eliminating aerodynamic drag, with virtually no drag or gas mileage penalty.

They can be loaded on the ground in minutes, quickly mounts directly to the lift gate, without a rack or special hardware or rails.  They carry a lot of gear and folds up flat for convenient storage in your trunk.

If you are looking for a solution that is more aerodynamic and easy to use than roof mount carriers look at rear mount cargo carriers.
